    Kindergarten Home Page

Welcome to the Kindergarten Home page.  Please check back often for news about our class!  We are off to a GREAT start!  The children will learn and grow at a fast pace but remember to enjoy the year.  Your child will never be at this stage in his/her life again and neither will you.  You should find all the information you need to help your child move forward in these pages.

Watch for a summer reading list, Math pages, and words to read before first grade.  These will all be coming home the last day of school, June 17th, along with their report cards.  The summer reading will have to be completed before returning to school in August.

We are working hard on our Math.  Please review each page with your child so they will remember the terms and concepts.  We are working on the ordinal numbers and the words.

It is always time to review what we know about money.  The children have worked with pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters at school.  In order to remember the values and to remember how to count money they need to practice.  Use the money snowman that the children made to practice at home.

The instructions to the game are as follows:

  1. Put some spare change into the snowman's pocket.
  2. Have your child take the change out and count it.
  3. Have your child write the amount of money he/she counted.
  4. If your child is correct allow him/her to put it into his/her piggy bank.

This is a good way for your child to learn to count money and save it as well.  Make sure you start with easier totals and progress to more difficult amounts.

It will be time soon to check on your child's supplies.  Crayons are beginning to get small and scarce.  Ask your child to let you know if they can use some new "tools".  Thanks for the tissues!  With the warm weather coming we can use some baby wipes.  They work great when the children return from recess all hot and sweaty!

We have completed our Kindergarten Math book!  We are now reviewing to make sure we have total understanding of the skills we need for first grade.  After vacation we will be starting on the first grade book.  We have already started to practice recognizing number words.  We have done "flip books" with number words and drawing the correct amount of objects.  You can help practice by asking your child how to spell, one, two, three, etc.

The children are all reading!  They can read sight words as well as sounding out simple "consanent-vowel-consanent" words.  Some are able to sound out more difficult combinations.  I am so proud of all of them!

Instead of doing "What's in the Sack?" we are now taking turns reading to our classmates each morning.  And the classmates are learning to listen well.  Have your child read to you each night and you will be pleasantly surprised.  I have some more "easy readers" coming this week so I will start lending them out to read at home.

The children have been doing a great job writing sentences using the "sight" words I introduce each day.  Often, I will repeat a word so they can try a different sentence.  As I tell them, "Practice makes perfect."  If you keep the word papers you can use them to review the words.  Also, have the children read the poems to you when they come home.  You will be surprised at how well they are reading.  I try to encourage the children to stretch their minds and put extra words in their sentences.  Some are doing this but others are content to write the minimum sentence so they can finish quickly.  When you read your child's sentence with them make suggestions.  For example if they wrote, "I see a horse."  Say to them, "This is a great sentence.  It would have been sensational if you wrote, 'I see a brown horse in the field."  They can look up "field" in the dictionary, "brown, in, and the" are all on the wall in the room.  It really isn't that much more work.  Your encouragement means the world to them!

Assignments

Class of 2009-10  Welcome to Kindergarten at OLV

Please keep this list of helpful information so your child's first year will go smoothly.

1. Read and keep handy your OLV Handbook for Parents.  Many of the rules and policies that will affect your child are in this handbook.

2. I use assertive discipline in this Kindergarten class, on the playground and at lunch.  The children are expected to follow the posted rules along with other rules that I have cited in class.  I will also review the playground rules and the uniform code.  It will take your children a week or so to become familiar with the rules so consequences (time-outs, loss of recess time) will not be strictly enforced until I feel the rules are understood.  There is a reward system for the class and time outs will be served for disruptions.  I try to focus more on the rewards for good behavior.

3. Label everything.  All items are the same so sweaters, sweatshirts, lunch boxes, crayons, glue, etc. need to have a name or at least initials.

Notice the uniform code in the handbook.  Please notice the summer uniform does not allow gym shorts except on gym day.

4. Provide your child with the items on the supply list. Check periodically to see if your child's supplies have to be replenished.

5. Naptime requires a mat cover in the form of a pillow case (with velcro or snaps to hold it in place).  The mat is 2'x4'.  The cover needs to be a little larger so it will slide on and off for washing.  We generally send them home for washing at Thanksgiving break and again in February.  An animal or  a blanket is allowed at "naptime".  Books are also allowed but not toys.  Please label animals and books so they will not be lost.

6. The lunch menu and calendar will be posted on the web site.  Lunch envelopes will be sent home on Thursday or Friday for the following week.  If your child is not buying lunch or milk, please return the envelope unmarked so I can reuse it the following week. Return the lunch envelope on the designated day.  Watch the web site for the days to return the envelope. We will be having recess at 9:40 a.m.  Your child might like a snack at that time.  Please pack the snack for recess separate from lunch, tell your child where to find it, and make it something simple that can be carried easily in the hand.

7. A take home folder, (The Daily Folder) will be coming home every day.  All important papers will be in this folder and anything you would like returned to me should be put in that folder.  When the folder gets worn, please replace it with a pocket folder of your own.  Make sure your child's name is clearly visible on the outside, front.

All correspondence should be put in a sealed envelope with your child's name and grade somewhere on the outside.

8. If your child rides in a car he/she is called a "rider."  If your child is taking a bus please put your child's bus number on him/her for the first few days.  The bus drivers are helpful but it is a good idea to take all precautions.  Riders are dismissed at 2:40 p.m.

If your child is leaving school by a different means on any given day you must send a note.  I will not be able to send your child on riders (even with a brother or sister) unless I have a signed note or confirmation from the office.

9. Some of the things we will be working on at the beginning of school are:  printing our whole name with lower case letters, naming the letters of the alphabet and numbers to 10 (20) in and out of sequence, counting to 10 (20), naming shapes,  writing numbers to 10 (20), writing the alphabet, writing capital and lower case letters (note the use of D'Nealian handwriting), singing songs, learning poems, enjoying and responding to stories, and saying prayers.

Please help your child by practicing skills when you notice a need.  Also practice buckling, tying, snapping, and buttoning.

Knowing name, address, telephone number, birthday and age will be required before the first report card.  Report cards are sent home twice a year.  There will be a Parent-Teacher Conference in November.

10. We will have a class list made at the beginning of the year .  If you choose to be on it you can provide names, addresses, phone numbers, and  email addresses.  This is helpful to parents because our children are in many towns and it is a great way to keep in touch.  It is also helpful in planning birthdays.  The class mother will be responsible for planning parties or any special activities during Catholic Schools Week.

There will also be an opportunity to read to the class on Fridays from 10:30 to 11. There will be more information and a sign up sheet at Information Night in September. Grandparents, aunts, uncles friends are also welcome to read.  This activity will require a CORI check (as will any kind of volunteering that brings you into the school).

Birthdays are celebrated with a song and some small items from me.

Because of a growing number of allergies, we will no longer have food treats sent into the classroom.

11. Each month I will send home several book and computer order forms from Scholastic.  This year you will be able to order directly online at scholastic.com.  I will be sending the username and password information.  The order will then be held until I complete it with in class orders and then all will be shipped to the clasroom.  I do this to earn bonus points for the class and because I know the prices and availability of reading materials and computer software are reasonable.  Please do not feel obligated to buy anything unless you want it.  I will not be offended.  Also, if you wish to purchase something as a gift and do not want your child to see it, let me know with a note and I will set it aside in the office so you can pick it up.

12. If you have any questions or any information about your child that you think will be helpful to me, please send a note and I will try to get back to you as soon as my schedule allows.  You may email but if the message is urgent a note in the daily folder is best.

13. Most importantly, RELAX and enjoy the year.

Announcements

Our Kindergarten Promotion Ceremony will be held in the school hall (cafeteria) on June 17th at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.  I ask the boys and girls to dress UP for the occassion.  They do not have to wear their uniform but it is not meant for sports outfits either. Please have the children in my classroom between 6:15 and 6:25.  The ceremony will start at 6:30.  The children will be wearing graduation hats (that I have made) so try not to wear too many ribbons etc.   June 17th will be the last day of school for the Kindergarten class.  They are ready to go to First Grade!

Our Teddy Bear's Picnic was a blast!  The children enjoyed the games and stories and hiding the Teddy Bear was fun for me.  I really had them fooled!  Ask them where I hid it.

Field Day was also a success.  The children played each game with gusto and proved to be good sports all day!

We will have Studies Weekly this year for Social Studies. It will come home once a week.  We will discuss it in class so you can read it through to see what was said.

Our Bead Jar is full and our reward was the Teddy Bear's Picnic. We don't have enough days left to fill the jar again but we are still working on self-control!

I always try to encourage the children to draw bodies, arms, legs, feet, hands, etc. on the people they draw.  I will expound on this with facial parts and other details.  I also ask for backgrounds.  I find that children do not automatically add in details unless they are asked.

Library books will be due in on Tuesdays.  Please remember so your child will be able to take out a new book each week.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the boys and girls for their wonderful "get well" cards and all their and your prayers.  I am doing well and will still need your prayers but I am certain with your help and support I will be fine.  God's plan for me to work at this wonderful school is a blessing!  The faculty, staff, parents, and students have all lifted my spirits and made me unafraid.  I feel I can conquer anything.  Thank you all!

I will keep the supply list on the web site so you can check it periodically and send in replacements as needed.

Supply List Crayons, pencils, white glue and glue stick, scissors, art shirt.

Donations, Tissues, hand wipes, nonalcoholic hand wash, Mr. Clean "magic erasers".
