Assignments
 Grade 8 Field Trip!
Grade 8 is planning a field trip to Six Flags, New England to take part in their Physics Day.  The trip is planned for Friday, May 14.  We are looking for parents who are interested in helping with transportation.  Please fill out the form that went home on February 26 and return by March 3.  Formal permissio slips will follow once we have the transportation details worked out.
Conference Forms
Conference forms were sent home during the week of 2/22 with you student.  Please return the form promptly, even if you don't feel a conference is necessary at this time.  COnferences will be offered before school, immediately after school, or during a prep period during the week of March 22.  Please have all forms in by Friday, March 5.
Each student is receiving a weekly homework paper.  On it, students and parents will find daily assignments for the week listed by course as well as tests, quizzes, and due dates for long term projects.  Grade 7 parents are asked to sign the paper at both the beginning and the end of the week.

Although all of the student computers now have Microsoft Office on them, we will continue using Google documents as a word processor to complete and share assignments.  Students may use Microsoft for Powerpoints or Excel for spreadsheets, or Word for research papers.  Nightly assignments and essays that are submitted for review should be completed using Google docs.

Grade 8's next book report is due on the first Friday in March.  It will be a free choice book.

Homework

During the school year, nightly homework will be assigned.  Students should expect a minimum of math homework every night.  Remember that homework is for reinforcement and practice.  Be sure to try to answer all questions.  If you are not sure, take your best guess and circle the problem/question number.  This will help us both identify areas that we need to review.

When completing your math assignments, be sure to show ALL your work.  Without it, it is impossible to find the cause of errors.

In addition to nightly homework, long term and weekly assignments will also be assigned as follows:
  • Math: Weekly word problem/geometry sheet due on Mondays (assigned on Tuesdays)
  • Science: Lab reports following assigned format due on Wednesdays
  • Grade 8 Students: book reports are due the first Friday of each month.  Students will receive a hand out detailing requirements.

A few housekeeping notes...

*Wednesdsay Work Sessions: Weekly work sessions will be available to all 7th and 8th grade students.  Students may stay until 4 pm on Wednesday afternoons to catch up on missed work, make up assignments that weren't satisfactorilly completed, retake math tests, or work on long term projects.  It is not a time to work on nightly homework assignments.  Students who have work to make up will bring home an "invitation" to the work session on Tuesday.  Please sign and return the slip  on Wednesday even if your child is unable to attend.  Students who wish to stay but did not receive an invitation are welcome, provided they bring in  a signed note stating the time at which they will be picked up.

*Absences are unavoidable.  Missed work will be compiled for your child by the end of the day when he or she is absent.  For students who do not have siblings in the school and have not made arrangements with classmates to bring their work home, the work is available for parents to pick up.

*As stated in the Student Handbook, students have one day per day of absence following their return to complete missed assignments.  For example, if a student is absent for three days, he has three days folling his return to make up missed work.  After the allotted time, assignments are considered late.

Student Council

*A new student council page has been added to the OLV student activities page.  Check back often for information regarding meetings, committees, and scheduled events

A FEW NOTES ABOUT EXTRA HELP FOR MATH

Extra help is offered twice weekly during the school day.  If more time is needed, students may request help before school on Tuesdays from 7:45-8:15.  Early morning help must be arranged in advance.  Students are expected to arrive at extra help with specific questions from homework assignments or classwork.

***New For 2009-2010****      The Middle School Academy @ OLV is excited to announce that we will have 1:1 computer access for all seventh and eighth grade students throughout the school day!  We are excited about the educational opportunities this will provide for our students, as well as the reduction in paper use the technology will allow for!
