Grade 5 Home Page

The 2011-2012 school year has officially begun!  This page contains general information for fifth graders and their parents.  At times it will also contain information regarding creative writing for the fourth and sixth graders.  It will be updated with important information throughout the school year.  Please check back often!

Spelling:  Words will be sent home Friday prior to the upcoming week.  Students should take a pre-test at home given by a parent or adult.  Each misspelled word should be written five times each on lined paper and attached to the pre-test (signed by a parent).  The pre-tests with the attached correctly spelled words should be handed in by Tuesday of the following week.  Other spelling activities or assignments will be given in school or for homework before the test on Thursday. *Note there are five challenge words on the weekly list.  Students are not penalized if they get the challenge words incorrect on the test, however, they will be awarded one extra point for each word that they get correct!

Reading:  The students will be working with the new Scott Foresman series entitled Reading Street.  This series encompasses all aspects of Language Arts: fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and writing.  Each Friday the students will be assessed on the weekly vocabulary words, decoding, and  comprehension  skills.  The fifth graders will also be reading a variety of different books this year.  They are required to read one book each month.  Some books will be read independently, while others will be explored by the entire class.  Students will continue utilizing the Reading Counts program by Scholastic, where they take a monthly quiz online after reading a book in the program.  In this way their comprehension is tested and monitored.   February Reading Counts book should be a mystery. * Remember every 100 pp. = a book stack for Mrs. Willand!

Social Studies:  We are going back in time!  We have begun Chapter 5!  Students should be referring to the textbook to complete handouts.  Also study notes taken in class and new vocabulary words on a daily basis!

Science: Students will be finishing Chapter 10 entitled "Protecting Earth's Resources" very soon.  The test will be the week of February 13th.  Start studying now!
