Assignments

Last updated 3/10/10

Reading:

Students need to read at home for a grand total of 130 minutes each week from Monday to Sunday. This breaks down to about 15 minutes every day. They are to fill out a Reading Time Sheet. Parents need to verify their reading times by initialing the appropriate spaces. These sheets need to be handed in to the teacher every Monday.

Click Reading Time Sheet to print out a new sheet for this week.

Here is a catalog of the books that I have in the grade 3 library. You can use it as a resource to find the level of books and to see if I have it in the grade 3 library.

Library catalog has been updated. Try the more interactive grade 3 library catalog to see how easy it is to navigate through to find what you are looking for.

Click Grade 3 Library to view the catalog.

Reading Partnerships:

Students need to read a preset number of pages and write their thoughts and questions on sticky notes. Then they are to meet with their partner a total of 3 times during the book to discuss what has been going on. At the end of the book they are to work on a project together and present it to the class, along with a book report form that is to be filled out by each of them and handed in to the teacher.

The first discussion meeting of reading partnership is on Wednesday, March 17th. All students need to have at least 2 stickies per chapter and 2 "Thick Questions".

Reading

The story for the week of March 8th is Yippee-Yay!.

Spelling

Spelling words were introduced on Thursday, March 4th. Test and worksheets are due Thursday, March 11th.

Math:

We are on chapter 8: Measurement and Time

This will be split up into 2 chapters. Which means that there will be 2 tests: one on measurement and one on time.

Please have your child review the Metric Units (Length, Capacity, and Mass) and the Customary Units (Length, Capacity, and Weight) on page 500 in their math books.

Please visit the Progress in Math website for enrichment activities: www.progressinmath.com

Parents if you would like to create worksheets of your own to test your children then go to www.mathfactscafe.com. Good luck!

Don't forget to keep reviewing time, money, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts!!

Religion

We are on chapter 12: God Calls Us to Holiness.

Chapter 12 test is on Monday, March 15th

 Science

We are on Chapter 5 Topic 1 Rocks, Clocks, Trees, and Bees.

 Social Studies

We are on chapter 4 The Pilgrims.

Chapter 4 test will be on Tuesday, March 9th.

Students will need to know the chapter 4 notes that they wrote into their notebooks.

Also they will need to locate the following places on a world map, Massachusetts map, and an United States map:

World map: United States and England

United States map: Massachusetts, Virginia, and Maine

Massachusetts map: Boston, Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, and Provincetown

 The Classroom Economy

As the students understand the dynamics of the store, they will transform into model citizens. After they get a handle on what is expected of them, they will no longer just think about themselves. They will start thinking of others first! Whether it is their classmates or their family, they will be willing to spend their hard earned cash on items for others. Donations are ALWAYS welcomed. Anything slightly used can be donated. Donations can include: toys, bouncy balls, footballs, pens, pencils, erasers, stickers, sharpeners, puzzles, games, cards, cars, etc. Inexpensive items for students to purchase using their own money. Don't forget about the adults. Students love to buy gifts for parents and grandparents.

The store on February 12th was more successful this time around. Governor Weed did not have to send out IOU's and actually made money from the store. Hopefully taxes will be around for one more cycle and be gone afterwards. Governor Weed feels she will be able to rehire some more help as well. So March looks like it is going to be a good month for all.

Newsflash: Governor Weed has just issued 2 new taxes to try to end the debt crisis in the third grade. The taxes are a $30.00 property tax (desks) to be paid every third Monday of the month starting immediately and a 30% state tax (classroom) to be paid every pay period.

Announcements

If you are looking for books that are "just right" for your child, there is a link on the left side of the page called "Scholastic Book Title Search". Just click on this site and type in the title or author of the book, and hopefully, you'll find out the level of that book. Remember, if you are having trouble with the site and don't know if the book is right for your child that you can perform the 5 finger test. Have your child read 100 words out loud to you. If he/she has trouble with 5 or more words then that book is too hard. Your child should struggle with 2-3 words in order for the book not to be too easy or too hard.

Scholastic Book orders are due Thursday, March 11th. Please note that I added the "Click" catalog to see how many are actually interested. If not enough students are interested then I will not hand out again.

Please make checks out to "SCHOLASTIC BOOKS". Please no cash.

Terra Nova Testing is finally over!!!
